Samenvatting
This anthology of Second World War poetry consists of the works of a wide range of poets, who all took part, in different ways, in the 1939-45 war. Accompanying each poem is a contemporary photograph, chosen to illustrate the subject matter of the poem and to add a further dimension to the verse, by giving a visual image of the conditions endured by the soldiers, sailors, airmen, prisoners and those waiting at home. The book is divided into sections. The first covers the war at home - the feelings of those left behind, particularly wives, mothers and girlfriends, and also the Blitz. Further sections cover the war in the air, the war at sea and preparing for battle - poems chosen to illustrate the feelings of the RAF pilot, or the men on a destroyer and covering such topics as the Battle of... (Lees verder) Britain and the Normandy landings. Another section looks at the plight of the prisoner of war - British, American and German. There are also poems about the fighting on the Eastern Front and in the Far East. The works of nearly 50 poems are included in this anthology. Among the many women poets represented are Olivia Fitzroy, Lois Clark and Mary Hacker. Poets who were killed in action include David Bourne and O. C. Chave. German poets inclyde Peter Huchel and Gunter Eich. There are also contributions from Russian poets such as Mikola Auramcyk and Pimien Pancanka.
