A few years ago, a plain, black-bound account book with handwritten entries was found in the library of the Hessian State Museum. On closer inspection, it turned out to be the stock book of the goldsmith Ernst Riegel, a workshop book in which short descriptions of completed objects, material and weight details, dates of completion, production and sales prices as well as the buyers of the work are recorded in several columns. Although not created until 1911, Riegel attempted to complete the book retrospectively up to 1902. He made the last entry in 1939, shortly before his death. The discovery - or rather the rediscovery - of this stock book and the fact that some of Ernst Riegel's works are part of the holdings of the Hessisches Landesmuseum prompted us to take a closer look at this artist... (Lees verder). Ernst Riegel was one of the most outstanding German goldsmiths at the beginning of our century. Artist and craftsman in one person - this is how he saw himself, in contrast to many of his contemporaries, who produced designs for industry and craftsmen as “designers”, but rarely worked on the objects themselves. Between 1905 and 1915, hardly any other member of his guild received such extensive and laudatory coverage in the journals, but to this day there has been no scholarly reappraisal or in-depth artistic appreciation. Research into Erst Riegel's life's work was made more difficult by a lack of knowledge about the whereabouts of his works, which, as we know today, were widely scattered in Germany and abroad.
