Samenvatting
In the playful style that characterizes his life and art, renowned artist Tommy Simpson takes a look at his youth in a small Midwestern town and its influence on his colorful, whimsical art.
Tommy Simpson is a woodworker, sculptor, fantasy furniture maker, painter, and poet acclaimed for his witty and joyous interpretations of Americana -- a true original in the art world. Two Looks to Home is a most unusual illustrated memoir/art book, illuminating his unique sensibility and how the work of an artist comes to be. With seasoned insight and humor and many a pun, Simpson sprinkles autobiographical vignettes, childhood candids, and wry poems amid the sparkling reproductions of his ingenious creations and Klee-like paintings. Arts writer Pam Koob provides an insightful introduction, exploring

The American Craft Museum in New York City is organizing "Garden of the Heart", an exhibition of a full-size "garden" of Simpson's fantasy sculptures and creations. Pilobolus, the famed dance group, has created a performance piece inspired by and to be performed in this garden. The exhibit/performance will open in June 2000 and travel around the country. Two Looks to Home will accompany the exhibit and include a chapter on the garden.
