Samenvatting
The Secret Life of Plants is the title of the latest artist's book by Anselm Kiefer (born 1945), which follows the form and concept of the three previously published volumes. Other works, "Your and My Age and the Age of the World," "Grass Will Grow Over Your Cities," and "I Hold All India in My Hand," were also purely illustrated books, without words, designed by Kiefer himself and based on a biblical or poetic, and in any case, deeply meaningful, motto. Kiefer's Secret Life of Plants takes place in extraterrestrial spheres: black-and-white photographs of spiral nebulae, the Milky Way, or the sun's prominences provide the backdrop for colorfully rendered leaves, branches, grasses, and flowers that seem to float freely in space. Uprooted and as if lost in space... (Lees verder), they gradually develop a dreamlike life of their own, merging with the stars to form a cosmic ballet. The book as a storehouse of knowledge is one of Anselm Kiefer's early obsessions. This is demonstrated not only by large installations such as his Lead Library, but also by the artist books he has published since 1969, in which he stores images – drawings or reworked photographs – in order to make them speak metaphorically.
