Samenvatting | Beuys was born in the hospital in Krefeld and grew up in Kleve and Rindern. He attended grammar school in Kleve and was noticed early on as a talented person. An example of this was his good piano playing. One of his favorite composers was Erik Satie. In 1936 he became a member of the Hitler Youth. From 1938 to 1941 he played cello in a Hitler Youth orchestra at grammar school. In 1939 he joined a circus, where he worked for a year as an animal keeper and circus sign carrier. Although Beuys had shown an early interest in art, he decided to study medicine. The outbreak of the Second World War thwarted this plan. At Easter 1941 he took his grammar school exams, after which he volunteered for the Luftwaffe. |
