The nineteenth century saw the rediscovery of fifteenth-century panel painters from the Netherlands, such as the Master of Flémalle alias Robert Campin, Rogier van der Weyden, the Van Eyck brothers, Hugo van der Goes, Hans Memling, Geertgen tot Sint Jans and Gerard David. Since then, interest in their works, as expressed in collecting and research, has taken off. The study of these paintings includes all kinds of aspects, such as attribution and dating, source research, interpretations of content, and research into workshop practices and the social and cultural-historical context. This publication offers an introduction to Old Netherlandish painting by showing the different ways in which this art has been collected, researched and interpreted since its rediscovery. Then the history of the rediscovery, the creation of collections, and the development of all kinds of art and cultural-historical visions and approaches is discussed.
