Samenvatting | A monograph on the archaeological remains of the once powerful Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms that dominated East Java from the 8th to the 16th century. During this some 700 year period, successive dynastic rulers constructed a multitude of magnificent palace and temple complexes of carved stone and brick, the remains of which are scattered throughout the countryside of East Java to the present day. The monograph focuses on both the larger sites, such as the Candi Jawa, Candi Jago, Singosari, Penataran, Trowulan, as well as lesser known terraced monuments. The plates illuminate overall architectural form of the temple towers as well as a myriad of detail in free-standing sculpture, relief carvings and architectural details. When the East Javanese were overrun by and converted to Islam in the 16th... (Lees verder) century, the surviving Majapatit aristocracy fled to Bali, where they reestablished their religion and culture. Thus this monograph is of interest not only to students of early Javanese culture but also to all with interest in the history of Bali, whose arts and architecture remain influenced by East Javanese motifs to the present. A high quality publication, privately printed and now difficult to find. 120 pp., 66 duotone & 40 colour plates, 4 line drawings, map of historic sites in East Java, genealogical chart of Majapahit royal family, bibliography. |
