Samenvatting | In 2007, multidisciplinary visual artist Hans Op de Beeck (*1969 in Turnhout) mounted a traveling exhibition called Extensions, which comprised video work, sculptural installations, sculptures, photographs, and drawings. This book documents the exhibition and also contains Spa, a short story inspired by it, which is written from the perspective of an eighty-year-old man looking back on his life during a forced stay at a spa resort for the elderly. The visual work focuses on the complex configurations of apparatus and architectural volumes which as a kind of extension of the human body seem to offer ready-made solutions to needs and ethical questions that may or may not have been created. Both the visual art and the story revolve around the same themes: the growing denial and manipulation... (Lees verder) of one's own body, the changing way we handle information and knowledge, the elimination of distance, and our problematic relationship with time and with each other in a technology-dominated environment. nnContextnnThe publication will be structured around a new short story that I am finishing at the moment. As regards size and philosophical approach, the story is comparable to My Brother's Gardens, a story that has already been published in a few literary magazines and art publications. nnThe new text is told from the perspective of an eighty-year-old man whose daughter leaves him for a month in a spa for the elderly that is part of an immense hospital complex. Through his own autobiography he reflects on themes that are also treated in the exhibition. The text will be illustrated by several new, digitally generated images. In the second part of the booklet, the works of art shown in Leuven, Utrecht and Italy will be presented. nnFor the visual arrangement and structure of this publication, I would like to refer to the extensive new monograph (Mercatorfonds, 2007), since the new publication will have a similar structure and design. |
